The Hypixel Wiki Style Guide is a resource to help keep the wiki's formatting consistent. Wikipedia's Manual of Style, the Minecraft Wiki Style Guide,[note 1] and the Hypixel SkyBlock Wiki's Style Manual are also useful resources.
TL;DR
- Games: Use minigames' preferred names.
- MC Versions: Use item/block names and textures from the earliest Minecraft version a feature is available for (typically 1.8+ or 1.21.9+).
- Capitalization: Use Title Case for Titles/Headings and follow established capitalization conventions.
- Style & Format: Use the third person; appropriate pronouns; and American English spelling, number, and date (Month DD, YYYY) formatting.
- Links: Create clear and effective links sparingly.
- Citations: Place citations after content/punctuation, and use standardized format templates.
- Tables: Use for data, values, and descriptions (e.g. Achievements or Cosmetics); avoid using tables for page layout.
- Emphasis: Use bold for the first instance of an article topic & bulleted topics, italics for general emphasis & franchises, and other formatting sparingly.
- Media: Use vanilla assets for uploaded files (preferably HD, .png, unedited) and follow established naming conventions.
- Layout: Use the general or type-specific page layouts.

Minecraft
As Hypixel spans versions from 1.8.9 to the most recent release, some items have multiple acceptable names (e.g. hardened clay → terracotta, stone slab → smooth stone slab, wool → white wool, etc.). The names from the earliest version a gamemode or feature is available on should be used. For most of the network besides Build Battle, Hypixel SMP, and SkyBlock, this is 1.8.9.
Article Titles and Headings
Titles and headings for articles and categories should be concise and recognizable as well as consistent with related pages.
- Start sections with level 2 headings (== Heading ==) and increase sequentially for subsequent sub-headings. Level 1 headings are reserved for the article title and should never be used.
- Always capitalize the first letter in a title (except for very rare cases). (MediaWiki automatically does this.)
- Treat titles as nouns or noun phrases.
- It is recommended to use title case (Written Like This) instead of sentence case (Written like this).
Disambiguation
Disambiguation pages should be made if there are multiple (typically more than two) articles with the same or very similar titles. In cases like this, put parentheses and a clarifying word or game name. The ambiguous name should then be turned into a disambiguation page. If the ambiguous name is the primary topic, the disambiguation page should be made with "(disambiguation)" at the end of the title.
For more info, see Wikipedia:Disambiguation.
Writing
Wiki pages are intended to provide factual information in a concise and easy-to-read manner. Information on the wiki can either come from in-game, in which case the info does not need to be cited, or externally from forum posts or other posts from Hypixel staff, where a reference should be created.
Articles should contain information that is current, anything that players would encounter if they logged in now; thus, pages should be written mostly in the present tense. Outdated information should be put in the "History" section, and other details can be put in the "Trivia" section.
Point of View
Articles should be written in the third-person and not reference the writer (first-person; I, me, we, our, etc.) or the reader (second-person; you, your, yours, etc.). Alternatives such as the player, players, users, team, and other general nouns are preferred.
Links
Links are important to provide context and allow readers to move through different articles. It is important to not overlink and make a page difficult to read, but it is also important not to underlink to the point where readers cannot find info they need.
- Do not place two or more links directly beside each other, making them look like one link (e.g. Arcade Coins).
- Favor linking to one article which one would find more useful in context (e.g. Arcade Coins links to Coins, not Arcade).
- Do not place links to the same thing too close to each other such as within the same section, paragraph, or sentence.
- If a link is sufficiently far away from any duplicates and makes sense to be linked, it is likely okay.
- Do not place links in headings.
- Generally, do not link more than 10% of the words on a page.
Citations
Citations should be used to verify information via a reliable source and/or provide further reading for users. For Hypixel, sources are mainly used to document exact dates of additions, changes, or removals or provide a source for something a staff member has said.
- Use <ref>...</ref> to create a citation, and place a citations list (<references />) under a "Sources" heading, the last heading of an article.
- Place citations after adjacent punctuation such as periods or commas.
- Do not place citations in headings.
- Use citation templates for standardized formatting (e.g. Template:Forums, Template:YouTube, etc.).
- It is recommended to not place citations in infoboxes if the same info is already in the article body (e.g. release dates).
Pronouns
Anything with a specified gender (male, female, inanimate) should use their respective pronouns (he/him/his, she/her/hers, it/it/its). Things with no apparent gender but not "inanimate" should use neutral pronouns (they/them/their).
Tables
Tables should be used to present data or lists of items with multiple parameters. For Hypixel, this is most commonly used for Achievements and Cosmetics. Due to the way they are displayed on some screens (e.g. mobile devices), tables should not be used in cases such as to format body text or when it may be easier to make individual headers for the content. Generally, tables should not have editor-made content, only data, values, and descriptions coming from the game or outside sources, though there may be exceptions (e.g. a "Notes" column; see § Naming Files).
Table Progress Tracking
Table Progress Tracking is a feature that allows users to log and save their progress directly on the wiki's tables. This feature should only be used for achievements pages and cosmetic subpages.[note 2]
When creating IDs for tables, follow one of the following formats listed. Instead of using numbers or other IDs, descriptive IDs help to future-proof the tables and make them easier to manage if Hypixel adds more sections (e.g. cosmetic types, etc.).
- Cosmetics: <game>-<cosmetictype> (e.g. arcade-movementtrails)
- Achievements: <game>-(chal|tier) (e.g. arcade-chal)
- Achievements (Legacy): <game>-leg(chal|tier) (e.g. arcade-legchal)
For more info, see Help:Table Progress Tracking.
General Formatting
Various choices for formatting are used due to Hypixel being a Canadian/American company.
Spelling
American English spellings are preferred as they are the most prevalent on the wiki and forums (e.g. defense not defence); though Hypixel is also a Canadian company. Canadian English generally combines spelling conventions of both American and British English, and British spellings are sometimes used in-game; these spellings can be duplicated on the wiki when appropriate.
Numbers and Dates
To decrease ambiguity with the various date formats used around the world, dates should use the American format, Month DD, YYYY (e.g. April 13, 2013), with the month written out. For sortable lists (like in tables), editors should use the YYYY-MM-DD format (e.g. 2013-04-13). Avoid using seasons in relation to dates except when referencing the four major server-wide events (Holidays, Easter, Summer, Halloween). Dates and times should be in relation to US Eastern Standard Time (EST) as it is used in the in-game clock and determines some mechanics across games (like SkyBlock) and the Hypixel Network.
This wiki again uses Canadian/American formatting, so commas should separate large magnitudes and periods should denote decimal points. For example, the number "ten-thousand five and one-tenth" would be written as "10,005.1".
Capitalization
Follow general English capitalization conventions (e.g. capitalize the first letter of a sentence, proper nouns, etc.). Listed are extra Minecraft and Hypixel capitalization conventions: Do not capitalize (unless at the start of a sentence):
- In-game items (e.g. bed, compass, iron sword, etc.)
- Mobs (e.g. ender dragon, sheep, zombie, etc.)
- "Game", "lobby", "event", etc. when used as a common noun (e.g. "...an Arcade game", "the Wool Games lobby", "a summer event", etc.)
Do capitalize:
- Games and lobbies (e.g. Bed Wars, Capture the Wool, Arcade Games, etc.)
- Mechanics including Collectibles, Currencies, systems, etc. (e.g. Gadgets, Pets; Coins, Mystery Dust; Friends, Reward Cards; etc.)
- Menu titles (e.g. My Profile, Game Menu, Lobby Selector, etc.)
- Enchantments (e.g. Knockback, Protection, Sharpness, etc.)
- Status Effects (e.g. Blindness, Invisibility, Speed, etc.)
- Game modes (e.g. Creative mode, Survival mode, Spectator mode, etc.)
- Main Lobby and Prototype Lobby
Emphasis
Typographic emphasis should be used sparingly to not disrupt the flow of text for the reader. There are only a few forms of emphasis that should be used on the wiki.
- Bold: Always bold the first instance of the article's topic. It can be used to denote a main topic in a bullet point (see § Screenshots), but it should not be used often otherwise, and not be used in headings or table headers where text weight is automatically larger.
- Italics: Italics should be the main marking for emphasis. Also italicize video games and franchises such as "Minecraft" or "MC Championship".
- Color: Color is rarely used in sentences for emphasis, but it can be used in select situations when referencing the color of text in-game. Light or dark colors may become illegible depending on whether light or dark mode is used.
- Font: The Minecraft font is generally used to depict a string of text that appears in-game. Other fonts like monospaced fonts can be used for code, websites, or commands.
Media
Media such as images and screenshots are an excellent way of showing content without blocks of text. Any images used on article pages should be relevant to the article.
Image files are encouraged to use the .png file type, though other files (e.g. .jpeg, etc.) are allowed.
Screenshots
In-game screenshots are encouraged to use 1.8.9 textures with no resource packs unless the screenshot comes from a game requiring newer versions to play or from a game with a required resource pack. Shaders are also discouraged as they do not accurately depict what a regular player would see joining the server.
- Consistency: Try to keep screenshots relatively consistent, especially if multiple are used in the same article.
- FOV: Any FOV is okay as long as it is not distracting and accurately captures what is being photographed.
- Resolution: High-definition (HD) screenshots are recommended.
- Post-Processing: Avoid any edits using external software (image-editors) that take away from the default look of the photo. Cropping and removing borders or compression artifacts are allowed.
Assets
Renders of in-game items, blocks, NPCs, heads, etc. are encouraged to use the textures from the earliest Minecraft version the game supports (1.8.9 for most of the server). Resource packs should not be used unless the render comes from a game with a required resource pack.
Hypixel Artwork
Hypixel artwork includes art, drawings, and similar media; renders; and UI banners or elements found in official news forum posts, from official Hypixel social media pages, or from directly on the Hypixel Network website (hypixel.net). These files are used with credit to Hypixel and are categorized with the Hypixel Art category.
Other File Types
Files other than images (including but not limited to GIFs, videos, audio) should be used sparingly. GIFs can be used in place of an image to display a repeating animation. As with image media, footage of Hypixel is encouraged to use 1.8.9 textures and no resource packs or shaders.
Naming Files
To make files easily searchable and usable, it is important to give files a suitable name. If the file is part of a larger group of related files (e.g. head renders, map images, game icons), their specific naming conventions should be used. If the file is original and uploaded by its author (e.g. screenshots, screen recordings), it is usually up to the author to create a suitable name. Uploading files with their default/automatically generated names (e.g. 2024-02-07_20.48.15.png) is discouraged.
Below are some file naming conventions established on the Hypixel Wiki:
| Type | File Name | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dyed leather armor | Item.<Item>.<HEX Color Code>.png | Item.Leather Chestplate.3BDCFF.png | |
| Game icons | Gameicon-<Game>.png | Gameicon-SkyBlock.png | |
| Game image | <Game>.png | Bed Wars.png | Artwork/screenshot provided by Hypixel or a screenshot of a recognizable aspect of the game |
| General head renders | Item.<Name>.png | Item.Discord.png | |
| Interactive map images | Map.<Year> <Season> <Game> Lobby.png | Map.2023 Summer Main Lobby.png | |
| Lobby info boards | Info.<Game>.png | Info.Arcade Games.png | |
| Map image | <Map> (<Game>).png | Airshow (Bed Wars).png | Image provided by Hypixel or a screenshot of a recognizable aspect of the map |
| Map image extended | <Map> (<Game> - <Type>).png | Basket (SkyWars - Seasonal).png | Seasonal maps |
| Render for a specific game | Item.<Game>.<Name>.png | Item.VampireZ.Blessed Amulet.png | |
| Reward cards | Reward Card.<Rarity>.<Amount/Type> <Item>.png | Reward Card.Epic.100000 Arcade Coins.png | Do not use commas for larger numbers (e.g. 40000 instead of 40,000) |
| Skin renders | Skin.<Name>.png | Skin.Achievement Guide.png |
Collections of items and head renders should use the format Item.<Type>.<Name>.png. This is usually used if items come from the same menu (e.g. Hats, Pets, Projectile Trails, Sprays, etc.). The <Type> is usually singular (e.g. Item.Pet.<Name>.png not Pets) except when the thing it references is plural (e.g. Item.Kill Messages.<Name>.png not Kill Message).
Image Versions
Images with multiple versions (such as the icon for a specific rank) have a number added to differentiate them. The images for the VIP rank are used as an example:
- VIP 1.png - Oldest version
- VIP 2.png
- VIP 3.png
- VIP 4.png
- VIP 5.png - Current version
- VIP.png redirects here
Page Layout
For consistency, all pages should follow the same general layout:
- Hatnotes (e.g. {{For}}, {{About}}, {{Redirect}}, etc.)
- Message/Notice boxes (e.g. {{WIP}}, {{Game}}, {{Prototype}}, etc.)
- Infobox
- Intro paragraph
- Article body
- History
- Trivia
- See Also
- Notes
- Sources (References)
- Navboxes
- Magic words (e.g. DEFAULTSORT, DISPLAYTITLE)
- Categories
- Inter-language links
Specific Layouts
Some page types have more specific layouts they should use.
